How to Make a Pinwheel Window Star

Hip Homeschool Moms
These window stars bring just that needed touch of spring to an otherwise dreary day.

Here's how you make them:

Supplies:

Kite paper or semi-transparent origami paper (pictured below)
Glue
Scissors, sharp blade or paper cutter

I have found a cheaper alternative to kite paper in this huge pack of semi-transparent origami paper that I order from overstock.com or Amazon.  It's around $20, but 500 sheets will last for a really, really long time.

How to make a pinwheel window star:

Start with a 6 x 6 inch square and cut it into fourths.  If you are making a rainbow star, you will need 8 different sheets (Cut into fourths- this is enough paper to make 4 stars).  I've made pinwheels out of one color and they look just as stunning.  In that case, you would only need 2 sheets, cut into fourths.

Align the individual square on a hard surface so that it looks like a diamond.

Fold in half to make a crease in the middle and then unfold.

Take the side two corners and fold to the middle line.  Glue in place.

Fold top left corner tip to the center line, then do the same with the right corner tip.

It should look like this...then glue in place.

Fold bottom right tip to the center line, like this and glue in place.

Fold all 8 pieces the same.

Now, it's time to put all the pieces together.

Take the unfolded side of the dark green piece (or top piece color)
and glue on top of the folded side of the lighter green
aligning to the center line as pictured above.

The last piece (yellow in this star) is slid in between until it lines up. It will end up being glued in two places. It is glued to the piece underneath (orange).  Then, the next piece is glued on top of it, completing the star.

You can hang up each individual star or string them together and hang them.

I love the beauty and simplicity of these stars.
They brighten my day every time I see them.
