When you have a sick kid on their birthday, make sure to have the candles separate from the cake. My solution involved a styrofoam ball sitting in a small cup.

I'm amazed at how much I'm still learning about life. I had planned a big day for my special 10 year old and all those plans got rearranged when he got sick. He still had the best day...watching movies, opening presents and by the end of the day felt well enough to have a small piece of cake. Sometimes we need to let go of our preconceived notions of perfection and go with the flow. There is joy to be found there.
