So I made this plan to read through the Newbery Medal winners from 1922-present. I was surprised to see I had read about a fifth of the list already:

1946: Strawberry Girl- Lenski
1945: Rabbit Hill- Lawson
1944: Johnny Tremain- Forbes
1942: The Matchlock Gun- Edmonds
Here's what I've read this summer so far:
2001: A Year Down Yonder- Peck (my favorite so far)
1998: Out of the Dust- Hesse
1981: Jacob Have I Loved- Paterson
1978: Bridge to Terabithia- Paterson
1977: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry- Taylor
1975: M.C. Higgins, the Great- Hamilton
1957: Miracles on Maple Hill- Sorenson
I'm in the middle of these books:
1963: A Wrinkle in Time- L'Engle
1953: Secret of the Andes- Clark
1960: Onion John- Krumgold
The Penderwicks---not an award winner but one suggested by my daughter. Her description: " it's a modern Little Women".
1958: Rifle for Watie- Keith This is a book I checked out, but frankly couldn't get past the boring cover. It's a historical fiction set in the Civil War. Tera was looking for something to read so I said try this. She devoured it in less than a couple of days. Her review: "You can't judge a book by it's cover" Apparently, I wasn't the only one to take issue with the cover.
One observation concerning Newbery Medal winner---do they all have to be so darn depressing? Or have I just read all the funny ones?
