This year we are studying US Geography. My goal is for the kids to learn their states and capitals. We are using a S.S. textbook that breaks the United States into regions. Then I broke the regions into a group of 2-3 states a week we are exploring and learning about.
There are many ways to learn the states and capitals but I found this website Tera and Daniel find hilarious: Mrs. Jones Mnemonic Devices These were written by 6th and 7th graders. I just happened upon this site and thought I would try it. It sounded a bit corny but since my kids love corny jokes anyway...I was right in thinking they would love this.

Picture a heart connected to the back of a Ford car. Heart + Ford = Hartford. Connected = Connecticut
Maine [Augusta]
Picture a lion with a long mane. A gust of wind is blowing his mane. Mane = Maine. A gust of = Augusta.
Massachusetts [Boston]
Picture the boss of a fish store chewing a one-ton fish. Chew = Massachusetts. Boss + ton = Boston
Before they could not remember the first three---now we are up to almost 9 and they are remembering them. You can't beat that!
