Unit Week- Rocks and Minerals
This is our last official unit of the year, we finish up school next week. I cannot wait for the summer break. I'm always ready for school to start again but I like, no make that LOVE summer.
We were studying Rocks and Minerals with a little Wild West thrown in. (Wild West unit did not quite come together so we spent a majority of our time on Rocks and Minerals)
The kids and I did tons of experiments this week, I did not take pictures of everything. Below is a sampling of our week.

The kids and I did tons of experiments this week, I did not take pictures of everything. Below is a sampling of our week.
Testing for limestone-acid test (vinegar)
Rock Stations- We went on a search for different kinds of rocks in the yard then did four tests with each rock- Sink or Float, Limestone Test, Magnetic, Scratch test for hardness with a penny, glass jar and knife.
Made our own toothpaste, with antacid, baking soda and water.
Chalk Paintings
Core Sampling
Cowboy Pinwheels.
I had some major flops this week, at least 3 experiments did not work. Our rock candy did not form. My sourdough starter for the cowboy unit was a total disaster. The pancakes so bad I threw it out before I made the whole batch. My johnny cakes to eat with our "Cowboy Beans" turned out too salty. But you win some, and you lose some.
Overall, it was a pretty good unit, we read a lot this week in addition to our hands-on projects. We finished a Sonlight book called The Master Puppeteer by Katherine Paterson. It was the first read aloud we have had in a while that the kids were begging to hear the next chapter. It is more appropriate for 2nd grade and up. This is a must read.

Tera Cooks- Take 2
Smores Crumb Bar Dessert
Candy Carrots (sliced carrots with butter and brown sugar)
Burt's Pizzas (Pepperoni and Supreme)
The finished product.
Tera is learning to cook this year by making the family a meal once a month or so. She plans the meal and then cooks it with supervision and help where needed. It's nice to see her wanting to learn a skill that I didn't really acquire until after I was married. When I was her age, I think I could make hot dogs and macaroni and cheese. I'm very proud of her. Her food tastes great too!

Worry Book
I have a confession....I'm a worrier. I get worked up about things and I worry. I know as a Christian that God is taking care of me and my needs- all my needs, but something in my brain still worries sometimes. This is a character flaw that I am continually working on. My mom always says my daughter is the "spittin' image of me". Guess what, she is a worrier, too. Always concerned over doing the right thing, others doing the right thing, is this dangerous-will they be hurt...etc. I don't want her to continue in these patterns of worry so I made her a Worry Book. A journal of sorts to write down her thoughts and concerns to help her refocus and retrain her thinking from worry to trust in the God who loves her and cares for every detail of her life.
I found a composition notebook on a shelf somewhere. Then I printed verses from the internet about worry to go in the front and back covers. For the outside I printed up Scriptures in bubble fonts so she could color them in and personalize the front and back. Scrapbook paper, glue and scissors and less than 30 minutes later- there you go- Tera's Worry Book. We talked about how she could write her worries down and then write a Scripture or a prayer to remind her not to worry. She was already coloring it in this afternoon. I confessed to her that I was a worrier and she suggested I make myself a Worry Book. I might just do that.
